CATANIA – The Nesima sports hall, which has been abandoned for twenty years and prey to vandals, it will not remain unfinished: the mayor Enrico Trantino and the councilor Sergio Parisi illustrated the redevelopment project of the structure with an investment of almost 15 million of community funds from the Pact for Catania.

At the meeting, which took place on the morning of Thursday 13 Junerepresentatives of the major sports clubs and federations of Catania and the city councilor Maurizio Zarbo also participated.

The executive project drawn up by the contracting company which was awarded the integrated design and execution service, will allow the facility to be given new life by transforming it into a center providing sports services and major entertainment events.

The redevelopment

The redevelopment of Pala Nesima, we read in a note from the municipality of Cataniais part of the regeneration and completion project of the multifunctional complex, which also includes the Olympic swimming pool, an eleven-a-side football pitch with regulation dimensions and two five-a-side football pitches, as well as large parking areas for cars and motorcycle.

“We have achieved an important goal not only for sport but for the whole city which will finally see the completion of a structure that has been abandoned for many years – said the mayor Enrico Trantino -. A goal long pursued by the councilor Parisi and the municipal management for sport and public works, led by the engineer Finocchiaro and the manager Paolo Di Caro, who following our direction have recovered the funds necessary to set up the process by working with great skill and determination. A structure that will be at the service of the city, in a populous and strategic area for the development of the metropolitan area”.

The structures remained unchanged by acts of vandalism suffered by the Pala Nesima are the load-bearing ones of the building such as the roof, the perimeter walls and the stands capable of holding over 4500 spectators. As part of the redevelopment project, the renovation of sports and non-sports floors, coverings, bathroom furnishings and technological systems is envisaged, keeping in mind the objectives relating to the reuse of the facility, i.e. “indoor” sports activities, including tennis, high-performance sports competitions high level, including international ones but also cultural events (concerts, shows, exhibitions, conferences), also considering the very large parterre over 70 meters long.

“These days – said councilor Parisi – I felt the great emotion of closing this long journey with a resolution of the council chaired by Mayor Trantino to regenerate this great sports facility for which we worked with the lights off and without making announcements as Mayor Trantino wants”.

The interventions

“I remember already four years ago – continues Parisi – with mayor Pogliese we had imagined this recovery process which has now finally led to the start of the construction site, with everyone’s great relief because it was unimaginable that the Pala Nesima would still remain in these conditions. An additional service for the world of city sport which is giving great satisfaction in terms of sporting results and popular following”.

The project for the redevelopment works of PalaNesima curated by the Ardesia studio, it aims to reduce the structural deficiencies of the neighborhood and improve the liveability of the urban space, with effects also on the surrounding areas and the reconstitution of an urban and neighborhood identity through meeting and socialization activities.

In particular the interventions foreseen in the project they concern new flooring of the entire sports facility and internal and external fixtures, restoration of toilets and changing rooms, new iron works (gratings and parapets), new lighting, air conditioning, electrical, fire prevention and water-sanitary systems.
