The G7, the meeting of heads of state and government of the seven most influential democracies in the world, began on Thursday in Puglia. The meeting will last until Saturday and is taking place in Borgo Egnazia, a complex of villas and luxury buildings in the province of Brindisi which incorporates traditional local architecture and which has long been a very popular place among politicians and famous people for events, weddings or simple holidays. In the morning, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and the United States, as well as the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council Charles Michel: after a short ceremony there was immediately a meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also arrived in the afternoon.

The main issue that the leaders will discuss in these days is the granting of a large loan of more than 50 billion euros to Ukraine, on which an agreement in principle has already been reached. The loan will be used to finance military resistance and the reconstruction of the energy infrastructure of the country, which has been fighting against the invasion of the Russian army for more than two years. Outside the G7 meetings, however, there is also a lot of talk about the seizure of a ship, which was supposed to host the police officers on duty during the meeting, due to its dilapidated condition.
