The intimidation against the journalist, notes the regional union, “emerged in the intercepted conversations between the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Calabria region and a man liaising between politics and the ‘Ndrangheta clans”.
«The Sicilian Press Association and the Sicilian Reporters Group express solidarity with their colleague Alessia Candito of the Palermo editorial team of Repubblica, who has suffered threats that emerged in the conversations intercepted between the group leader of the Fratelli d’Italia of the Calabria Region and a liaison man between politics and the clans of the ‘Ndrangheta». This can be read in a statement published on Wednesday 12 June 2024 by the regional union on its website.
«Assostampa and the journalists’ group – continues the note – reiterate their concern for the work of their colleagues who carry out their activities on the front line with correctness and determination».
The Cdr of Repubblica also expressed his opinion on the matter: «The Editorial Committee, knowing that it is interpreting the feelings of Repubblica’s colleagues, is at Alessia Candito’s side. The “judgments” and not so veiled threats addressed to her in the intercepted conversations between the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Calabria region and a liaison between politics and the ‘Ndrangheta clans speak for themselves. Because this is the climate, this is the great gray area that reporters can only tell, because this is our job. Others, however, not only never show solidarity with those who inform public opinion (a fundamental task in a democracy), but they invent laws so that the gray areas remain gray. And being able to be even blacker.”
