letter from Don Cannizzaro to the mayor

The following is the letter signed by the Priest Antonio Concetto Cannizzaro of the parish of San Giorgio al Corso sent to the mayor of Reggio Calabria Giuseppe Falcomatà and to the Superintendence for Archaeological and Landscape Heritage.

“With this request, I ask the SV Ill.me to take into consideration the situation that has been created in the churchyard of the church of S. Giorgio al Corso for about six years. With protocol n° 8717 of 01.21.2019 the Mayor of Reggio gave his authorization for the return to the historic site of the marble statue commonly called ‘Tutelary Angel‘”.

The parish priest of San Giorgio continues in the letter:

“After numerous requests from this parish to the relevant authorities, throughout this time nothing was done. To this day the statue is in the entrance hall of the town hall resting on a crumbling wooden support. The concrete support remains in the churchyard, decorated with historic marble headstones, with clear signs of the demolition of the base on which the ancient statue rested”.

Don Cannizzaro concludes:

“Numerous tourists who go to visit the church ask about the statue, which is still reported in its ancient site in tourist guides today. The surviving support of the statue causes considerable aesthetic damage to the historic site of the church and seriously disfigures the perspective. You ask the SS. VV. how they intend to remedy a situation frankly no longer bearable“.
