From 14 to 16 June 2024 the European Days of Archaeologypromoted by the French Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives and coordinated in Italy by the General Directorate of Museums and the General Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Ministry of Culture.

As part of the initiative, which for years has attracted a varied audience of non-experts around the themes of archaeological dissemination, the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the municipality of Naples proposes a structured program of activities for Friday 14 June. It begins with the opening of the site of Carminiello ai Mannesi, located in the street of the same name, a side street of via Duomo where part of a block of ancient Neapolis is preserved.

It’s about one of the few open-air archaeological sites in the historic center of Napothere: here you can recognize structures with a residential function and thermal environments, in which a shrine dedicated to the cult of the god Mithras was subsequently established. The structures, dating back to the end of the 1st century. BC and the 2nd century. AD, appear of notable consistency and articulated on several levels. Their discovery took place after the bombings of the Second World War, which caused the destruction of the baroque church in which they were incorporated. The initiative, already proposed with great public success, aims to increase the cultural offer of the ancient centre, allowing access to an archaeological site that is not always open.

Visitors will be welcomed by archaeological officials and technical collaborators of the Superintendency; the guided tours, organized by the Manallart cooperative, will begin at 9.30; the last entry is scheduled for 12.30. At 7.30 pm, in the Sala Assoli, located in Vico Lungo Teatro Nuovo 110, the meeting-show entitled Conversations on Neapolis will be held for the second consecutive year. Stories and signs of a graeca urbs, organized in collaboration with Casa del Contemporaneo. THE archaeological officials of the Superintendency they will tell the story of the city by telling it through images, with particular attention to the sites that have been the subject of excavation or restoration in recent years.

The choice to hold the meeting in a theater room, already successfully experimented last year for the Archeology Days, aims to intercept a different audience and to contaminate the communicative form of the conference with that of the performing arts. The performance of the actress Martina Carpino will alternate with the interventions of the officials, presenting the reading of passages taken from ancient literary sources, while the images will be accompanied by music performed live by Marcello Gelone (guitar).
