An island that ‘works’ with only clean energy. It is the Island of Vignole for which the council of the Municipality of Venice approved, on the proposal of the urban planning councilor Massimiliano De Martin, the municipal council resolution for the construction of the agro-voltaic greenhouse for the renewable energy community. That is, a photovoltaic greenhouse in a state-owned area located south of the Isola delle Vignole, designated by municipal planning instruments as public greenery and entrusted as a temporary concession to the local Veras association.

PROJECT TO SATISFY ENERGY DEMAND OF THE WHOLE ISLAND, WHICH BECOMES CARBON FREE

The association intends to establish ana Renewable energy community for the production and consumption of clean energy: an agro-voltaic greenhouse of approximately 400 square meters which, with a power of approximately 100 kWh, can satisfy the demand for clean energy of all the users present on the island (inhabitants, economic activities, public lighting), “starting the process of decarbonisation of the territory”, highlights De Martin. All of this then serves as a reference model and learning laboratory for similar experiences. The estimated cost of the intervention is 60,000 euros, which the association intends to cover with national and regional funding dedicated to supporting energy communities.
The greenhouse will be used for the cultivation of vegetables, as in the island’s growing tradition. The association also intends to develop awareness and educational actions aimed at young and very young people in the area, on the relationships between natural territory, organic food and health, supported by the production of clean energy.

THE MAYOR: ENERGY CRISIS AND CLIMATE CHANGE REQUIRE INNOVATIVE CHOICES

“The issues of the energy crisis, climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are emerging and priority issues on the political agenda, both locally and internationally – explains Mayor Luigi Brugnaro – The Municipality of Venice has always been sensitive to the issues environmental and the intervention in Vignole has the aim of experimenting with innovative roles for the management and governance of the community, promoting new forms of efficiency and sustainable energy production. A concrete example of ecological transition.”
