The investigation activity concluded by the 1st Turin Metropolitan Operations Unit originated from a report sent by the Special Department of the Corps based in Rome relating to the failure to declare for tax purposes considerable compensation received by the artist following the creation and sale of Nft (non-fungible token), a term used to define digital certificates certifying the originality and possession of a particular electronic content and which are comparable, from a fiscal point of view, to real artwork.
In particular, starting from the report, it was analytically found that, given the numerous sales of digital works of art (NFT) which took place on dedicated online portals, detected on the blockchainthe artist, for the tax years 2021 and 2022, systematically failed to declare the compensation received in cryptocurrency equal to approximately 3.3 million eurosconstituting income from self-employment, determining atax evasion criminally relevant.
Furthermore, transactions for the conversion of cryptocurrencies into fiat money have been identified on the platforms of various exchanges, suitable for generating capital gains, not included in the required tax returns, for further 34,000 euros which were reported to the competent Financial Offices together with violations relating to regulatory obligations regarding tax monitoring.
