«Investigation prevention and repression». Two concepts that the police commissioner of Salerno, Giancarlo Conticchio, he repeats several times when asked for a joke about the operation he completed men of the Flying Squad who caught two thieves in Mercatello as they were leaving a recently burgled apartment. An operation, the one completed yesterday morning by the men of the deputy commissioner Gianni Di Palma, studied in detail and which brings to justice those responsible for the thefts in the capital in recent weeks. The two still had the bags in their hands with the stolen goods inside: gold jewelry, jewels and several important watches. The attack was carried out in an apartment in a building in via Somma in Mercatello. In the pockets of the two thugs, Ciro Romano and Mariorosario Del Prato, from Naples, Two sets of Bulgarian keys were also found which open almost all armored doors except the European ones. THE COMMENT
«The operation – explains Police Commissioner Conticchio – was studied in detail. We decided to organize services in some areas of the city to understand the safety level of each. So we moved all the patrols of the Flying section to just one neighborhood, pushing the thieves to act elsewhere. And so it was: they realized during the inspections that it was impossible to act in that area and they moved to Mercatello where there were other services set up specifically with the men of the Flying Squad and so we caught them as they came out of the door of the building. There was a strong synergy between investigative and prevention activities». The Salerno police chief also launches an appeal to the citizens: «We are convinced that they are responsible for other attacks in the city and for this reason I am now asking the citizens for help: come to us at the police station to view the mug shots, maybe you can give us help to reconstruct all the operations well.” Hence the recommendation: «Do not post photos of the places you are in, so as to avoid being monitored».
THE INVESTIGATIONS
Work is now underway to reconstruct the trail used by the thieves to identify their targets and to place the stolen goods on the market. But, above all, we try to reconstruct the shots scored to present to the chief prosecutor Giuseppe Borrelli a detailed file with evidence and documentary documents that can stand up to trial and thus bring the two to justice. Thieves who, in fact, had already been identified by the Flying Squad agents and followed, so as to be able to catch them red-handed. They had arrived in the city with two cars which were found and seized by the police. According to investigators, they also had accomplices who probably went into hiding when they realized that their plan had failed. And whose identification the police are sure of arriving at quickly. Even a scientific check on the seized cars could provide interesting investigative insights to close the circle on the Neapolitan group.
THE EMERGENCY
And if Police Commissioner Conticchio speaks of “prevention and investigative repression”, what is still missing in the city is prevention linked to an electronic video surveillance system that can cover the most at-risk areas. Like the seafront for example, a drug dealing and meeting area for minors. Like the neighborhoods of the eastern suburbs which are experiencing development from a commercial and nightlife point of view. The OK has arrived from the ministry, also from the Prefecture.
