From Monday 10 June, pedestrian traffic lights with the T-Exspeed electronic monitoring system will come into operation on the Catania ring road, capable of detecting infringements by those who do not respect red lights and pedestrian crossings. The innovative high-tech device, based on real-time Computer Vision techniques, will initially be active between Lorenzo Bolano, Andrea Doria and Odorico da Pordenone avenues and will allow violators to be sanctioned after the immediate detection of violations. The new tool is strongly supported by the municipal administration to safeguard all users and in particular pedestrians and will be progressively installed in traffic lights in many other parts of the city. At the same time, the Municipality will replace the older traffic lights with new generation ones and remodulate the waiting times for pedestrians to cross.

This “smart” system it is underlined by Palazzo degli Elefanti, in fact it replaces the municipal police operator in charge of every traffic light. «On Monday we will activate the T-exspeed traffic lights which will record the violations of those who run red lights at pedestrian traffic lights, charging them for the infringement. For now located on the ring road, we hope to install them in other treacherous sections as well. Soon we will also put the speed cameras into operation.” The mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, stated this in a post published on Facebook. «Some naive people – adds the mayor – think it is a way of making money. Maybe they will be the same ones who railed about the absence of speed limitation systems during fatal accidents. In a normal country the rules are followed without the need for safeguards to guarantee compliance. And if those who administer put in place tools to improve safety, he acts as a family man; not to ‘make money'”.
