THE EAGLE. With the statue and relics of the saint in procession, L’Aquila celebrated the feast of San Massimo, patron saint of the city. Last night there were the last two appointments with the stationary mass presided over by the coadjutor archbishop Antonio D’Angelo and animated by the adult section of the San Massimo diocesan choir. The statue, carried by volunteers of the civic action group “Jemo ‘nnanzi”, crossed the streets of the city preceded by the Paganica band concert and followed by the faithful and the authorities, including the prefect Giancarlo Di Vincenzo and the deputy mayor Raffaele Daniele. The feast of San Massimo ended in the evening with the concert from the ancient organ of the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, performed by the maestro Giandomenico Piermarinititular organist of the papal archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
The feast of San Massimo began last Thursday with the triduum in preparation, the celebration of the triduum masses in the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio in Piazza Duomo also on Friday and Saturday.
On Sunday, again in the Suffragio church, the cardinal archbishop Giuseppe Petrocchi had begun the solemn celebrations with the stationary mass animated by the Lorenzo Perosi Choir. The religious celebration was followed by “A song for San Massimo”, the seventh edition of the choral festival organized by the Youth Section of the Diocesan Choir. Yesterday the celebrations continued with the chapter mass presided over by the archdeacon of the Metropolitan Chapter Sergio Maggioni. The feast of San Massimo was also characterized by the traditional fair in the city streets which this year too was staged in the circuit around the sixteenth-century Castle (via Tagliacozzo, via Castello and viale Gran Sasso). A circuit which, in the intentions of the organizers of Fiva Confcommercio, is preparing to become a sort of fixed “location” for events of this type. (rp)
