An artificial rockfall tunnel, approximately 40 meters long to protect the railway from hydrogeological instability and strengthen the rock walls for 360 metres.

She was the one who built it Italian Railway Networkleader of the FS Group Infrastructure Hub along the line OrteFalconara Between Terni And They come.

The interventions are part of the broader hydrogeological risk mitigation project in the area, already affected by a landslide in January 2021. Added to these works are other projects aimed at strengthening the network on the Terni-Foligno line.

This is the case of the construction, again by RFI, of the so-called Slab Track in the Balduini Tunnel in the Baiano-Giuncano section, approximately 1700 meters long.

The Slab Track is an innovative construction methodology, in which the track does not have a ballast with sleepers and ballast but is built on a prefabricated reinforced concrete structure. Its use reduces the frequency of maintenance interventions, thus ensuring greater regularity in railway circulation.

On the same route. to further strengthen the network, work was also carried out in the Spoleto station, linked to the creation of the new ACC (Computerized Central Equipment), a real “control room” which, thanks to the potential offered by electronics, manages in a railway circulation is more effective and efficient, especially in case of critical issues, guaranteeing greater flexibility in the use of station platforms.

Work also continues for the doubling of the Spoleto-Campello line and for the activation of the ERTMS (European Rail Transport Management System), the most advanced system for the supervision and control of train travel, between Foligno, Terni and Orte.

Important projects that will deliver a more modern and enhanced network, thanks to works that involved the investment of 20 million euros by the Italian Railway Network and involved around 120 people, including RFI employees and contracting companies.
