Nursing students on «Erasmus» in Lombardy from South America: the project of the University of Insubria

A «Transatlantic Erasmus” Between South America and Lombardy for students of Nursing. The first 12 boys, coming from the universities of Peru and Paraguay, they will arrive in July and stay until December. During the semester they will be able to complete their education, learn Italian and do internship in six RSAs in the provinces of Varese, Milan, Brescia and Cremona.

The «Magellano student» project, promoted by the University of Insubria and the Gulliver Centre, also has the support of the employment agency Openjobmetis through its International Recruitment hub, while the RSAs involved are part of the Uneba network.

«We are thinking of training courses oriented towards these students taking care of patients with frailty and chronic diseases“, explains Fabio Angeli, director of the Nursing degree course in Varese. «The kids will be guests of the Gulliver center for the first month, then the RSAs will offer them food and accommodation», he adds Guido Bonoldicouncilor of the Municipality of Varese with responsibility for healthcare.

At the end of the semester the children will return to their homeland, but thanks to the knowledge acquired in the future they will be able to work more easily in Italy, where the shortage of nurses puts social and healthcare structures in difficulty, as he recalls Daniela Pomarollihead of International Recruitment: «Nurses – International Recruitment was created with the aim of supporting an increasingly virtuous migratory flow: we support people by giving all the support necessary to move to us and work in accredited healthcare facilities».
