The last hours of Doctor Semmelweiss – la Ringhiera – are staged at Fusco in Taranto

It will be staged next Wednesday 12 June, on the Fusco stage in Taranto (7pm, free entry) “As it was – the last hours of Dr. Fülöp Semmelweiss”a theatrical performance inspired by the last hours of the life of the Hungarian doctor who was the first to discover the importance of hand hygiene.

The event, promoted by the Fülöp association and sponsored by the Campania Region, the Puglia Region and the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, is part of the national campaign for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (ICA) and antibiotic resistance (AMR) . “The venue also strongly wants it in Taranto Order of Nursing Professions directed by Dr. Pierpaolo Volpe – we read in the note – who collaborated on the initiative, increasingly convinced of the value of raising awareness in the health field”.

“The text, written by Carolina Sellitto and performed by Fabio Brescia and Adriano Fiorillo, tells the story of Ignác Fülöp Semmelweis, a Hungarian obstetrician who was the first, in the 19th century, he understood the importance of a simple gesture such as hand washing against the proliferation of bacteria in the hospital sector, marking a turning point and changing the face of medicine. His work – they continue from Opi Taranto – contributed enormously to the study of contact bacterial transmissions and the prevention of puerperal fever. Due to the strong hostility of his colleagues towards him, Fülöp fell into depression and died in a mental hospital due to septicemia. In 2013, UNESCO decided to include some documents on Semmelweis’s discovery in the Memory of the World register. The University of Budapest is named after him today.”
