European Championships in Calabria, Cosenza and Crotone, the last strongholds of the M5S but it is a consolation prize. Conte loses everywhere

The provinces of Cosenza and Crotone are confirmed among the (few, now) strongholds of the European vote for the Five Star Movement. The Grillini – who will elect the Calabrian Pasquale Tridico, former president of the INPS, as MEP – confirm themselves as the first party in the Bruzia province with around 21% of the votes; similar result to Crotone. In both cases they precede Fratelli d’Italia, the first team in Calabria (also) thanks to the leadership of the league leaders Giorgia Meloni. More than a triumph, however, it is a consolation prize: the M5S squanders a wealth of important preferences: in Crotone it achieved 32.91% of the 2019 European elections, in Cosenza from 31.17% five years ago.

European elections 2024, M5S the most voted in Cosenza, Rende and Corigliano Rossano

In the capital Bruzio the 5 Star Movement confirms itself as the first party in the city with 19.93%. To follow the Democratic party with 18.65% of the votes and on the lowest step of the podium Brothers of Italy with 15.55%. Exploit consisting of Avs, the Green Left Alliance, which places itself as the fourth force of the capital with 11.85%, surpassing even Forza Italia which stood at 11.31%. Finally, to follow League with 8.76% e United States of Europe with 8.61%.

In line with the trend that rewards the M5S, the most voted in Cosenza at the 2024 European elections was the former president of the INPS Pasquale Tridico with 1512 preferences. Behind his back Mimmo Lucano (Avs-Alleanza Verdi Sinsitra) with 1473 and the prime minister Giorgia Meloni (Brothers of Italy) with 1456. Just off the podium Antonio Decaro (Pd) with 1337, the vice-president of the Calabria Region Giusi Princi (Forza Italia) with 1327 e Maria Pia Funaro (Avs-Alleanza Verdi Sinsitra) with 1219. The latter is the most voted Cosenza candidate in the municipal area.

Even in nearby Rende the M5S confirms itself as the leading party with 21.3% of the votes, ahead of the Democratic Party (17.69%) and the Brothers of Italy (14.81%) and Avs (12.41%). The urban area, therefore, rewards centre-left formations: a fact that will be food for thought also in view of the single city project. Local elections, however, will be another story.

In the most populous center of the province, Corigliano Rossano, the result of the M5S is even more rounded: a 28.7% which seems to revive old glories. Here the movement loses only 4% of the consensus compared to 2019. Perhaps thanks to the driving force of the municipal elections, perhaps because the spearhead Tridico, originally from Sibaritide, is perceived as a local candidate. In second place in the city Fdi (21.92%)exploit for the United States of Europe with 13.73% (but in this case there was really a citizen candidate, Stefano Mascaro, which collected more than 1,000 preferences. Crotone votes little, but gives 26.6% to the Cinquestelle

In the province that confirms the lowest turnout figure (33.82%) the voting of the European elections is still slow. For the counting data there is the definitive data for Crotone city where out of 74 sections scrutinized, the first party voted that of the Cinquestelle is confirmed, obtaining 26.63% (3430 votes in absolute terms), just above Brothers of Italy at 19.77% (2546); followed by the Pd with 17.04 (2194), and then Forza Italia with 14.59% (1879). Detached in order there are Greens and Left Alliance at 7.10% (914), Salvini’s League at 6.54% (842), United States of Europe at 3.44% (443) with Santoro’s Pace Terra e Dignità which surpasses (at 1.98% and 255 absolute votes) Action of Calenda who remains at 1.63% for 210 votes.

It is a figure certainly not in contrast with the overall one of the Pythagorean province: Tridico collects 2,802 votes, Princi more than 4,400, more than Prime Minister Meloni who just exceeds 4,000. Tajani further back with 2,836. “remains” at 3461, Tridico of the five stars at 2386 (also surpassed by Tajani with 2439). (Proculus Guide)
