TREVISO – A long one procession of bicycles along Viale della Repubblica, right at the point where Giulia Mauri was hit last Tuesday and right at 1.20pm, the exact time the accident that took the life of the 38-year-old from Treviso occurred. Thus the Fiab of Treviso (Italian Federation of Friends of the Bicycle) wants to remember both the memory of the woman mowed down by a crazy van and to underline how unsafe the roads are for the weakest users such as pedestrians and, indeed, cyclists. And he points his finger at the danger of Viale della Repubblica Luigi Calesso, spokesperson for the Civic Coalition. Which unrolls a whole series of data.

THE NUMBERS

«The tables contained in the preparatory documentation of Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan – explains Calesso – they point out very clearly that Viale della Repubblica: a) is a street where a very high number of accidents are recorded; b) the number of accidents along the avenue is increasing; c) the number of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists is high.” The analysis then continues: Intersections with 10 or more accidents. Where Viale della Repubblica stands out: «The tables with number 4 record the road accidents that occurred in the periods 2007-2010, 2011-2014 and 2015-2018 at intersections where at least 10 occurred. In the first period, some were recorded, as highlights the table contained in the table, 288 at the intersections of the entire municipal area and 40 at the intersections along Viale della Repubblica. Between 2022 and 2014 there were 180 in the entire municipal area and 62 along Viale della Repubblica, in the third 154 in the entire city and 47 in Viale della Repubblica”. The conclusion: «Between 2007-2010 and 2015-2018, therefore, the total number of accidents decreased from 288 to 154, almost halved, while those recorded along Viale della Repubblica increased from 35 to 42 (by 20%) passing from 13.89% to 30.52% of the total. If the length of the avenue justifies the high number of accidents, what is more worrying is the fact that the significant trend towards their reduction in the entire city territory was not only not recorded in Viale della Repubblica which, on the contrary, highlights their increase”.

THE PROPOSALS

Calesso therefore calls for «interventions that allow those who go on foot or by bicycle to “have priority” over vehicles in order to be adequately protected because, as we well know, these road users are the most at risk in the event of accidents with motor vehicles. It would be useful, for example, for the intersections along the avenue to be equipped with “advanced houses” for cyclists which would allow them to enter the intersections before vehicles. A second intervention should be that of a lane reserved for buses which allows public transport to move more easily and quickly, encouraging the use of local public transport”.
