Giacomo Matteotti, President Mattarella’s tribute in the place where he was kidnapped and killed

FRATTA POLESINE (ROVIGO) – A 100 years exact fromhomocide Of Giacomo Matteottitoday Radio Coop will broadcast some excerpts of the speech given in Parliament on 30 May 1924 by the secretary of the then Unity Socialist Party, to denounce fascist violence. This is an initiative that received the patronage of the Polesine Committee for the Celebrations of Matteotti 1924-2024. “We defend the free sovereignty of the Italian people, to whom we send our highest greetings and believe we are reclaiming their dignity by asking the elections council to postpone the elections, affected by violence”, Matteotti had stated in the chamber, and then added to the party comrades, once his speech was concluded: “I have given my speech. Now you prepare the funeral speech for me”. Eleven days later a fascist squad kidnapped Matteotti and killed him.

In the meantime there is a lot of satisfaction on the part of the vice mayor of Fratta, Alessandro Baldo, who took stock of the first day of the reopening of the Matteotti house museum, after four months of closure for renovation works. «Over 200 citizens of Fratta enthusiastically welcomed the reopening of the house – Baldo specifies – it was very nice to see entire families queuing to be able to enter. The enthusiasm was palpable, especially at the end of the visit. The new layout, at the level of the best European museums, was highly appreciated.”
This morning, at 11 in Rome, on the Lungotevere Arnaldo da Brescia (where Matteotti was kidnapped and killed on 10 June 1924), the commemoration will be held, in the presence of some representatives of the municipal administration of Fratta. There will be testimonies from the statesman’s nieces, Laura and Elena Matteotti, together with those of Giovanni and Enrico Volterra, and Giovanna Cosattini. The ceremony is organized by the Saragat-Matteotti cultural club, in collaboration with the Giacomo Matteotti Foundation, the Matteotti House Museum, the Municipalities of Fratta and Riano (where Matteotti’s body was found on 16 August 1924). On this occasion, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, will pay a floral tribute. Numerous representatives of the national political world will be present, including the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. The event has the patronage of the Senate and Chamber, the Municipalities of Fratta and Rome, and the Lazio Region. Furthermore there is the high patronage of the European Parliament.
Meanwhile, San Marino has also decided to dedicate a special philatelic postmark to the Frattini deputy.
