Thunderstorms and large hail in the next few hours, the key phase between the evening and night

Watch out for the next few hours due to the transit of an unstable front which will cause strong thunderstorms and local hailstorms, including large ones.

After strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms in Piedmont, Lombardy and the Ligurian hinterland, the situation will worsen further during the night, when the bad weather will move eastward. In particular, the districts of the Triveneto Triveneto (Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) will have to deal with heavy rain, thunderstorms and even local hailstorms. Below are the images of the strong storm that hit the city of Milan around 9.30pm on Sunday 9 June.

In detail: once the storms reach eastern Lombardy they will tend to move towards the Garda area and the Veronese area in late evening/early night, and then intensify further on the Venetian plain (Vicenza) where they will encounter fertile ground to strengthen themselves again. In fact, south-eastern ventilation rich in energy will still blow in these areas, which will favor a continuous supply of storm systems, with supercells that may affect the medium-high plains of Veneto and then move towards Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Right between Veneto and Friuli, nocturnal hailstorms, even medium-large ones (up to 4-5cm in diameter), are not excluded.

Starting from Monday 10th, the arrival of another disturbance coming from Northern Europe will lead to a worsening of atmospheric conditions. The meeting between the fresh air at high altitude, which drives the unstable front, and the heat brought by the African anticyclone will create the ideal conditions for the development of new intense thunderstorms, accompanied by the risk of hailstorms, even of considerable size, associated with violent storms, more likely in the Alpine-pre-Alpine sectors and in a large part of Northern Italy (at the margins only Liguria and part of Emilia Romagna).
