Italy will be the last country to close the polls at 11pm and therefore the Italian result will be the last one, the one that will complete the European framework for designing the new Parliament. While the projections where people have already voted speak of a clear victory for the right in Germany and Austria, in Italy we are still at the turnout of 7.00 pm, the last before the closing time of 11.00 pm.

Around 41% of voters went to the polls in the country and in the last few hours there does not seem to be the conditions for an “assault” on the polls.

At 7.00 pm on the second day of opening of the polls to elect the 8 members of the European Parliament, who belong to the Italian constituency 5 or the island constituency which includes Sicily and Sardinia, Sicily recorded an overall turnout which is always very worrying of just 29.04%.

The driving effect continues for the vote in the 37 municipalities of the island where there are two ballots delivered to the voters as they also vote to elect the mayors and renew the municipal councils. Voters interested in the administrative round are 483,901. Voting operations took place yesterday Saturday 8 June 2024, from 3pm to 11pm, and resumed today Sunday 9 June 2024, from 7am to end at 11pm.

The turnout at 7.00 pm was 29.04% in Sicily

The turnout, therefore, stands at 29.04% in Sicily, decidedly lower than the national figure where the turnout stands at around 41%.

Caltanissetta and its province always lead the turnout. This is because it is the only area where, in addition to the European elections, citizens are also called to elect the mayor and the municipal council of the capital. The turnout here is 36.76%

Next, now, is Messina with 31.44%, then Palermo with 30.92%, then Trapani with 30.21% followed by Agrigento with 27.86. The two provinces even surpass the third metropolitan area of the island, that of Catania.

The bottom trio is always the same: third to last Siracusa with 25.49%; penultimate Enna with 24.73% and finally Ragusa closes with a turnout of 23.04%

The scrutiny

Immediately after closing, at 11pm, the counting of ballots for the European elections will begin. The law provides that this ballot takes place simultaneously in all EU countries. In some countries voting began as early as Thursday 6 June. those who have finished voting have sealed the ballot boxes and will open them at 11pm on Sunday 9 June.

The counting for the administrative elections will begin at 2pm on Monday 10 June. The possible run-off round for the local elections will be held, however, on Sunday 23 June from 7am to 11pm and on Monday 24 June from 7am to 3pm.

How to vote, what is needed

The voter must go to the polls bringing with them their voter card and a valid identity document. One or two preferences can be expressed for the candidates for the city council; in the event that two preferences are expressed, these must concern candidates of different genders (a man and a woman). If both preferences belong to the same gender, the second will be cancelled.

The vote expressed for a list extends to the mayoral candidate connected to it, but not vice versa. You can express your preference for a mayoral candidate and a list connected to him, and also express your choice of candidates for the city council; or you can express your preference for a mayoral candidate and for a list not connected to him, with related preferences for the candidates for the city council.
