Greek’s tower. Among other things, a washing machine, a child’s bicycle, a chair, a life jacket, an old fishing net and a vase rest were “fished” from the sea, as well as a lot of plastic and various glass bottles and jars.

Almost three quintals of waste were recovered from the sea by around fifty volunteers who this morning, Sunday 9 June, participated in the sixth edition of Spazzapnea in the Torre del Greco port area, the “clean seabed” operation which for the second time consecutive one took place in the area of the eastern pier, thanks to the will of the Apnea Academy and Spazzapnea odv, with the contribution of the Torrese Nautical Club, Coast Guard and WWF, with the patronage of the Municipality, an organization which thanks to the interest of the mayor Luigi Mennella had two vehicles and employees from the company that deals with the waste collection service in the city intervene on site.

The waste was appropriately differentiated, so as to recover the fractions removed from the dry part. The initiative, of a national nature, in addition to Torre del Greco, also simultaneously involved Genoa, Marina di Pisa, Ancona, Rome, Bari and Ustica.

The objective, behind the challenge that rewarded those who managed to recover the most waste from the seabed of the chosen area, was to raise people’s awareness of the protection of the sea and the coast:

“We are satisfied with the success of the initiative in Torre del Greco – explained the representative of the Apnea Academy, Enrico Lupo – An enthusiastic response from citizens of all ages. Even those who were present at the port thanked us for our commitment which, in addition to the seabed in front of the port, also saw us engaged along the cliffs closest to the pier. It all started from the idea of Paolo Acanti, who created the initiative in Genoa which then spread throughout Italy. The goal is to make everyone understand that little is needed to protect our coastline.”

The president of the Torre del Greco Nautical Club, Gianluigi Ascione, was also satisfied: “We have offered all the necessary support to the initiative, also because we fully support the cause that drives Spazzapnea, which aims in particular to safeguard a fundamental resource for the economy as national as the sea.”
