The “call to brushes” turned out to be a success! Once again, despite the heat, the Crotone community mobilized and responded to the social appeal launched by the #IoResto association.
On the night of the celebrations of the Feast of the Madonna di Capocolonna, at dawn
on May 20, 2024, a fire damaged the San Nikolaosa 12 meter boat that was
landed on the Crotone seafront walkway on 22 March 2020 with twelve migrants on board
Kurdish nationality and whose wreck it had been transformed by the artist Massimo Sirellion initiative
of the #IoResto association, in an “Hymn to Life”, a monument to welcome, to inclusion which
it had been inaugurated a few weeks earlier, at Parco Pitagora in Crotone. «Following the fire, despite the reassurances and certainties received, the commitments made were not respected. Thus the citizens gathered their forces and following the “call to brushes” launched on social media by #IoResto, on the morning of June 8th the installation once again stood proudly on the spot where it had been burned, as a powerful symbol of resilience, thanks to the joint action of the #IoResto association and the Crotone community”, explained the organizers. «Today, once again, the true protagonist of the change was the heart, the heart of the citizens, the heart of all those people who have been close to us since the beginning of our journey… with facts, making themselves available and always pushing one step beyond the limit. We decided, in mutual agreement with the artist, to leave a burnt section, as a warning and in memory of the event suffered by the work of art on the night between 19th and 20th May, when we found it deeply wounded. Now “the barge” is only waiting for the return of Massimo Sirelli to refine it with his unmistakable touch and thus return to its initial splendor”.
