On the occasion of the assassination of Baldassarre Nastasi which took place on 4 June 1979 in Partanna in the province of Trapani, we highlight the essay, included in the project “#ourstudentiraccontanoimartiridellalegalità”, by the student Dalila Ananias, class III section. C of the “Filolao” scientific high school in Crotone.
“Baldassarre Nastasi he has always been a man who gave importance to his work. He was a brave and skilled Carabinieri brigadier, who on 06/04/1979 found himself faced with a robbery that led to his death. He was sent to the province of Agrigento, in Montevago, and during his service he found himself having to face violent robbers who had robbed a bank in the center of the city. During the operation he was not alone, there was also a dear workmate accompanying him, Lorenzo Brunetti, 26 years old, originally from Foggia, with whom he had a good relationship. Unfortunately, both never returned home. Although he had been wounded with numerous gunshots by one of the criminals, he managed to grab his weapon and casually hit the two fugitives. He did not aim well, due to the pain of his wounds, thus leaving the culprits to escape. Although rescue was prompt, the two dear friends were now lifeless. Nastasi left an immense sadness and a great void in the lives of his family and colleagues who always knew him as a cheerful person dedicated to his work, a carabiniere who always put the good of the community first. Although he died at just 40 years old, he was an example for many young people who decided to take the path of law enforcement, because with his life he testified that it is necessary to fight until the end to have “justice ”
The National Coordination of Teachers of the discipline of Human Rights he remembers with emotion the heroic action carried out by the two carabinieri in the attempt to capture and bring to justice the criminals responsible for a robbery. The courage to wear a uniform requires dedication and a high sense of state; all those who serve citizens and protect them, often sacrificing their own lives, deserve a higher salary. We fight against many difficulties every day, considering that many men in the police force have families and children. We are close to the families of the victims and to those who seriously choose such a noble profession.

Baldassarre’s story, like all the others, reminds us that by sharing and nurturing the same ideals we can have a profound impact on our own reality.
