Second day of the European Athletics Championships in Rome, with Italy winning three golds with Jacobs Simonelli and Fabbri, Ali silver in the 100m and long run with Furlani and a bronze with Fortunato

Jacobs the gold in the 100 meters (10″02), second place and silver for Ali (10″05). Amazing gold also for Simonelli in the 110 hurdleswith the time of 13″05, the best performance of the year. Fabbri was also overwhelming, gold in weight. There are three Italian gold medals with Fabbri in the weight, six in total with Ali’s silver in the 100m, Furlani’s in the long jump (complete with an Under20 record); Bronze for Francesco Fortunato.

Jacobs and the suspicion of a contracture

Jacobs started like this from the blocks, he stretched out with a bit of effort to catch up with the blue giant Ali (2nd with 10″05, his progress was enormous) and the Englishman Glave, 3rd. But the joy of his 10″02 is tainted by a soreness in his left calf which faded his smile and left him with a limp. «I believe and hope it is a contracture – he reassures, very dry – due to the two close races. I’m happy but I know I still have a lot of work to do” explained Marcell at the end of the race.

Fabbri: «Now I have to get used to the level I have reached»

Fabbri’s words: «I was very tense, my legs were very heavy. Then I concentrated, I thought about doing a little more but it wasn’t easy. Now I have to get used to the level I have reached. Without victory it would have been a serious setback to my career. I dedicate this success to my family, they have always made me feel important. Then to my coach and my mental coach.”

Simonelli: «I always believe in it»

Lorenzo Simonelli is beaming: «I always believe in it, I’m ready for the Olympics. I wanted gold and I got it.”
After the four medals (already two golds) on the debut day, Italy therefore he wants to continue to give himself joy in these European Athletics Championships and the medal table is ready to be updated shortly.

Today’s results

Another great satisfaction came today from the Italian march, after yesterday’s gold and silver for Palmisano and Trapletti: Francesco Fortunato won the bronze medal in the 20 kilometers with a time of 1h19:54 (41 seconds away from the gold which went to the Swede Karlstrom).

Amazing Simonelli in the semi-final of the 110 hurdles: first place and gold obtained with a new Italian record with a time of 13″05.
