In the next 36 hours, very strong thunderstorms will be possible in Northern Italy with hail showers that may be abundant. The bulk of the phenomena is expected from tomorrow afternoon, Sunday 9 June, until the early hours of Monday.

As the latest Civil Protection bulletin explains, a disturbance of Atlantic origin is rapidly moving from the Iberian peninsula towards northern Italy, leading to an increase in instability with predominantly thunderstorm precipitation, locally also of strong intensity.

The civil protection department has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions which predicts – from early Sunday morning – scattered rainfall, mainly showers or thunderstorms, in Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. These phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent lightning strikes, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind.

Yellow alert has been assessed in the Aosta Valley, in the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas of Piedmont, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in part of Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto and in Umbria. In the rest of Italy, except for rain showers in the central regions, a summery and sunny climate will remain prevalent with unchanged temperatures characterized by the African anticyclone.

Meanwhile, dramatic images arrive from Austria where flooding is underway in the Styria region due to heavy rain; in Deutschfeistritz some people took refuge on the roofs of their cars.
