It only took one day for the pre-sale of the flagship event of the Sassari summer to close with a sold out: “The great opera in the square”, which will bring Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece to the stage in the Italian square on 12th July. Othello.” The great event is included in the 2024 opera season of the de Carolis institution, created thanks to the contribution of the Ministry, the Region, the Municipality of Sassari and the Sardinia Foundation.
An exceptional response from the public, the organizers comment, which in this new edition was even more enthusiastic if you consider that the 1,200 paid entries (last year entry was free) sold out in just 24 hours with long queues at the box office and dozens of people waiting hours before the theater gates open just like for a pop concert.”
After the experiment with “Pagliacci”, last year with “Otello” the de Carolis institution raised the bar by bringing to the streets a majestic, complex work dedicated to an increasingly demanding and competent audience. He will also conduct the Orchestra in this edition Sergio Oliva which after the great public and critical consensus with “Pagliacci” returns to the podium of the Sassari theatre.
The direction, sets and costumes of the new staging of the de Carolis will be handled by Alberto Gazale, baritone from Sassari, director and artistic director of the institution since 2024, highly appreciated in the 2023 edition for the direction of “Pagliacci”. «We are really happy with this incredible result – says Gazale – which once again confirms the public’s great interest in this project in which we believe a lot and which we would like to grow further.
Selling 1,200 tickets in a single day is truly an exceptional result but I would like to remind those who were unable to purchase the entrance ticket that in our Italian square there is still room for over 3,000 people. Those who already attended last year’s event know that the raised stage allows for optimal viewing from all sides of the square. No barriers obstruct your vision. As in the last edition, the bar tables will become seats in the galleries and opera stages for this great celebration of the people designed to be open to the city.”
Dario di Vietri will play Othello, in the cast of “Othello” also the Sardinian baritone Marco Caria who, after the success of the last season, which saw him protagonist in Sassari of “Pagliacci” and “Nabucco”, will play the role of Iago. There is also great anticipation for Angela Nisi, the acclaimed Nedda in “Pagliacci” will now be Desdemona. In the meantime, rehearsals for “Falso Betrayal” a world premiere opera by Marco Tutino have begun at the Teatro Comunale. The opera will be staged at the Comunale di Sassari on 28 and 30 June. Beatrice Venezi will conduct the de Carolis Orchestra. The direction, scenes and costumes will be handled by a great international name: Hugo de Ana.
