The story of Wolfgang, the German astrophysicist who moved to Calabria. “It’s beautiful here”

SAN LUCIDO From Germany to Calabria, enchanted by the Calabrian landscape and climate. It is the story, told by Rainews, of Wolfgang Glatzel, a prestigious German astrophysicist who chose to “retire” in quiet Calabria, more precisely in San Lucido, in the Cosentino area. After having worked at high levels in the world of research and universities, with experiences in Cambridge and a professorship in Gottingen, Glatzel decided to move to Calabria with his wife at the age of 70. «I have always been attracted by botany and plants» he explains to Rainews. «My dream was an olive garden». Not an isolated case, as demonstrated by the similar story of Georg Gottlob, a professor and IT luminary who left Oxford to move to Calabria and teach at Unical.

Conquered by the landscape and Calabrian food

An isolated house overlooking the sea with terrace and garden and, above all, the land to cultivate that he had dreamed of for years. «Now we have planted bergamot, lemon and orange trees. Everything there is in this paradise». The love for Calabria began a long time ago, when Glatzel and his wife began traveling around the region as simple tourists. What won him over was the landscape, the calm and also the food, from the prawns to the typical Calabrian “sausage”: «It’s incredible here, it’s beautiful. Calabrian cuisine is excellent». «The astrophysicist, however, has not stopped working and from the terrace of San Lucido continues to observe and study the stars, in particular Rho Cassiopeiae. «It can be observed from the sky, in this period it has many eruptions. He’s very interesting as a star.”
