The “landing in Lombardy” is making the rounds on the web.

The oversight of a Uno Mattina journalist has gone viral, Domenico Marocchi, who last June 6, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Normandy landings, said: “Today is a historic day, very important because 80 years ago, on 6 June 1944, 156 thousand men landed in Lombardy. Today we celebrate D-Day”. Obviously, the error made the rounds on the web, amid general hilarity on social media.

That of the journalist, however, was not an isolated case. In fact, too Monica Gasperini of Studio Aperto, TG4 and TG La7 repeated the same slip, but in the case of Bianca Caterina Bizzarri (presenter of the La7 news) managed to correct herself at the last minute, avoiding the imaginative gaffe that confuses Normandy with Lombardy, while memes and sarcastic comments were unleashed on the web.

D-Day

The Normandy landings, which went down in history as “D-day” (doomsday day), took place on 6 June 1944. The allied armies of the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada organized a gigantic landing action in northern France to create a bridgehead and penetrate the areas occupied by the German armies. It was one of the largest military operations ever, as well as a turning point of the Second World War. After a day of very hard fighting, which cost the lives of over twelve thousand soldiers, the allies managed to conquer and defend some positions on the beaches and begin the campaign which ended with the surrender of Germany, eleven months later.
