Varese: an appeal for the safety of Piazza Repubblica

The Piazza Repubblica and Varese Center Committee has written to the mayor Davide Galimberti and the prefect of Varese, Salvatore Pasquariello, asking for interventions to improve the safety and decorum of Piazza Repubblica. The requests include the installation of an advertising video, the strengthening of the video surveillance system and interventions to combat drug dealing

The Piazza Repubblica Committee And Varese Centrechaired by Massimo Rovera, recently drafted a letter addressed to the mayor Davide Galimberti and the prefect of Varese, Salvatore Pasquariello, with the aim of urging targeted interventions aimed at guaranteeing a better decoration and greater security in the historical Republic Square and in its immediate vicinity. As part of this communication, the Committee outlined a series of requests and proposals, motivating the urgency of an intervention with reference to the principle of safeguarding public order and the protection of the safety of citizens, visitors and commercial operators who frequent the area.

Among the main requests made, the proposal to stand out install an advertising video on the roof of the Municipality’s barracks, projecting images of the square, the theater and the surrounding monumental areas in real time. Furthermore, it is proposed to upgrade the video surveillance system through the installation of new cameras, in order to fully cover the entire extension of Piazza Repubblica and the surrounding areas dedicated to the fallen.

Another point raised concerns the need to guarantee a constant monitoring through the real-time connection of the cameras present on site, aimed at ensuring greater effectiveness in preventing and combating illicit activities and behavior that does not comply with the law. Furthermore, we ask for the adoption of concrete measures aimed at combating the phenomenon of drug dealing, through the cutting of the three pine groves located in the monumental area, considered strategic places for such illicit activities.

From a perspective of urban redevelopment and valorisation of the historical-artistic heritage of the city, the Committee also proposes the declassification of Piazza Repubblica from central zone 1 to peripheral zoneor the tax exemption of commercial operators who pay for public land, in order to facilitate the development of local economic activities and promote a better distribution of urban spaces.

Finally, the letter suggests that the costs deriving from the implementation of the aforementioned interventions can be supported using the revenues deriving from the tourist tax, leaving the possibility for the Committee to seek dedicated sponsors to further contribute to the implementation of the proposed interventions.

The Committee’s communication reflects a proactive and collaborative approach, aimed at promoting a constructive dialogue between local institutions and the civic community in order to pursue the common good and guarantee a safer, more welcoming and livable urban environment for all citizens and visitors of Varese.
