PERUGIA – «Kisses and hugs. And a quick coffee. We didn’t talk about the Florence sentence, no. It was just an affectionate meeting, as always.” Few words and those who know the lawyer Luciano Ghirga know that they are already too many. Especially if we are talking about Amanda Knox, the most famous client in the world of one of the deans of the Perugia bar. Yesterday morning, as anticipated, the two met in the city two years after their last meeting and a few days after the sentence of the Court of Appeal of Florence which confirmed the three-year sentence (already served) for the slander against Patrick Lumumba , who in 2007 the young American indicated – according to the accusations – as the murderer of Meredith Kercher. And the most media-focused trial of recent years still has no end in sight, given Knox’s own announcement that she intends to proceed with the appeal to the Supreme Court.

But in the meantime yesterday, in the premises of the Sacred Heart in Montebello, Amanda met Ghirga but also Don Saulo Scarabattoli, the former chaplain of the women’s section of the Capanne prison, with whom she formed a sincere relationship during her four years of detention. Also with them were Eureka and Echo, the two children of Knox and her husband Christopher Robinson, and her mother Edda Mellas. The meeting was described as strictly private and “affectionate”. No tears, but only hugs with two of the men who were closest to Amanda in Perugia, during the trials for which she was initially convicted (together with her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito), then acquitted, then convicted again and finally finally freed by the Court of Cassation from the stigma of the murderer. «We talked about what you do now – concludes lawyer Ghirga -. She is writing another book. But I also know that she is very determined. She is very convinced that she wants to continue with the appeal.”
Amanda’s new visit to Perugia was also an opportunity to give an exclusive interview to SkyTg24, in which she reiterated her position on the murder and on the accusations against Patrick: she has always said she was innocent for both. “I have not slandered and I have not killed.” Speaking to Simone Baglivo, in the interview recorded «a few kilometers from where the Kercher crime took place», Amanda explains for almost eight minutes: «From the beginning I tried to do the right thing and tell the truth. I was acquitted of murder and all those bad things, but they say “an innocent person does not slander others”. I didn’t slander but people think that way because they don’t understand interrogations. The European Court said my human rights were violated: mine was a retraction not an accusation. People think they know everything about this case, which has been on the air all these years. I ask that everyone read this memoir to ask themselves if there is a girl who voluntarily accused someone knowing that she was innocent. For me it is clear from the document. And I hope that if people take the time to look at the documents to see my innocence.”
The young, now 36-year-old, writer, blogger and activist insists, here giving in to tears: «I am not Foxy Knoxy, I am Amanda Knox. I didn’t slander, I didn’t kill. There are many victims in this story. First of all Meredith, Patrick, me, Raffaele.” She still does not apologize to Lumumba, who in Florence reiterated his anger at having been sent to prison as an innocent person, as actually confirmed also by the judges who acquitted her.
But Amanda ends like this: «I discovered my strength in this experience and I hope that as my children grow up they will see it. For me it was an opportunity to grow and be the person I need to be, the person who fights for the truth, an example for my children. I love this country and I hope that one day we can truly understand each other.”
