Brindisi, huge seizure of mussels at the weekly market – Pugliapress

Large seizure of black mussels and other fish products took place yesterday at the weekly market of Sant’Elia in Brindisi. During the joint operation of Veterinary service Area B, Nas of Taranto, Local Police and Carabinieri, street vendors were identified who, on improvised stalls, offered mussels and various types of fish without the necessary traceability documentation.

The authorities, engaged in the large-scale seizure of mussels, blocked the sale of around one hundred kilos of fish products, including sea bass, cicada and pink prawns. These products, without any certification, represented a potential health risk for consumers and were immediately destroyed.

Adriano Rotunno, director of the veterinary service, highlighted how this operation underlines the effectiveness of collaboration between local authorities and law enforcement. The huge seizure of mussels and other fish products is a clear example of how the synergy between different agencies can increase food safety levels and improve sanitation standards in the markets.

This activity demonstrates that close collaboration between the Service and law enforcement can lead to an increase in the level of food safety,” Rotunno said.

The huge seizure of mussels in Brindisi also serves as a warning to consumers. Rotunno urges everyone to purchase only from authorized sellers and regularly labeled products, in order to avoid possible food poisoning. Food safety depends not only on the rigor of inspections, but also on consumers’ awareness of the origin of the products they purchase.

The huge seizure of mussels at the Sant’Elia market represents an important victory in the fight against the illegal sale of untraceable fish products. Continued collaboration between veterinary services, law enforcement and informed consumers is essential to ensure food safety and public health. The periodicity of these checks and the rigor in the application of the rules are fundamental to maintaining high quality standards in the agri-food sector.
