The municipal elections are a barrier against abstention

A total of 248,043 voters are voting today (from 3pm to 11pm) and tomorrow (from 7am to 11pm) for the European-administrative pairing. Those who will vote only for mayors and municipal councilors are 64,583, distributed across 25 out of 60 municipalities.

Municipal

An important electoral test, both to verify the resistance of the national parties in this race for the European seats, and to redesign the map of local power in the province of Viterbo, in the name of that transversalism, or inciucism, which for some years now has become the municipal figure. There are 56 aspiring mayors, with 63 supporting lists, for a total of 800 candidates. A veritable army of aspiring councilors who will obviously be decimated by the voters’ pencils.

The municipal elections are a barrier against abstention

The unknown in this round too will be represented by the abstention party. The administrative ones will act as a barrier to the flight from polling stations, a worryingly growing phenomenon in all Western democracies but especially in Italy. In the municipalities, as we know, the call of the political forest is still strong by virtue of that mixture of interests, personalities, parental or friendly relationships. Even more so due to the fact that in almost all cases voting takes place in small towns of a few thousand or hundreds of inhabitants, where there is no family that does not have a relative on the list.

A run-off is expected in Tarquinia

An exception is the Municipality of Tarquinia, the largest among those at the polls, the only one above 15 thousand inhabitants where a run-off is expected. There are five candidates for mayor in the Etruscan town, for a total of 13 lists in the running. The outgoing mayor, Alessandro Giulivi, returns, this time no longer with the green Northern League jacket but with the “flaming” one of the Brothers of Italy. There are 5 lists to support him: in addition to that of the Melonians, FI, Noi Moderati, Rinascimento and Futura. With Giulivi the entire outgoing council returns with a single surprise: that of the former mayor of nearby Montalto di Castro Sergio Caci. Challenging Giulivi are Renato Bacciardi (supported by three civic lists), Francesco Sposetti, Martina Tosoni and Gianni Moscherini. The outgoing mayor of Bagnoregio Luca Profili, also a member of Fratelli d’Italia, also returns. He will have to deal with Diana Giacobbi and Massimo Neroni.
