Venice, 7 June. (askanews) – Great names of the modern world in dialogue with the masterpieces of the past: at the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia the history of art offers an evocative temporal short circuit, part of a project to enlarge the mental spaces of the famous museum. This is the exhibition “Affinità elective”, which was introduced to us by Roberta Battaglia, deputy director of the Gallerie dell’Accademia: “Putting the modern and the contemporary with the ancient – she told us – is a project that was born from the collaboration with the Berggruen museum in Berlin and with the Berggruen Institute at the Casa dei Tre Coi here in Venice, and it is a rather ambitious and also strong project, that of relating the masterpieces of our museum of ancient art with works of the avant-garde, especially Picasso , Matisse, Klee and Giacometti”. The modern works are placed discreetly in the space of the Academy, they play with references and narratives, they show that sense of continuity that is always found, even after centuries, between the painting of the Venetian Renaissance and that of the radical twentieth century. “These combinations create new energies and new suggestions – added Battaglia – for the curators, for art historians, but also for the visitor. Everyone will be able to create their own reflections, which are also encouraged and in some way also enlivened from these new comparisons”. The dialogue is also that between the Berggruen galaxy, with its modernist works, and the very soul of Venice, which the Academy in a certain way represents and preserves. But also an exchange between German and Italian culture, well summarized by the title, “Elective Affinities”, which refers to the book that Goethe wrote in our country.
