Bari, the red bench vandalized at the San Paolo

A new serious act of vandalism in the city against a symbol of the fight against violence against women: the red bench in the San Paolo district was damaged by unknown persons. The bench, located in front of the Town Hall 3, in via Vincenzo Ricchioni, recently suffered the breakage of one of the wooden bars that support the seat. The bench, therefore, is no longer intact. The cowardly gesture has created reactions of indignation among the residents of the area, who are calling for immediate restoration work.

It is not the first time, however, that the bench has suffered similar acts: in May 2021, the day after its inauguration, someone had removed the plaque in memory of the activist Edda Cutrignelli, who passed away in December 2020, and of her great commitment civic towards the rights in defense of women. That bench that was Edda’s dream, before she left. For some time now, in many Italian cities, public administrations have placed red benches to remember women victims of violence and, unfortunately, there are quite a few cases of vandalism. It will certainly not be the action of vandals that will erase the important message of that red bench.
