Citizen mourning for the funeral of Giorgio Calcagni

BASSANO ROMANO – «In recent days the community is shaken by the passing of a father, a boy, a companion for everyone, on and off the pitch. It is indigestible to imagine how Giorgio’s smile, kindness and cheerfulness were torn away from the affection of his family, loved ones and friends by a fatal and tragic accident at work.” These are the words of Mayor Emanuele Maggi in a long message of condolence in memory of Giorgio Calcagni, the 40-year-old who lost his life in an accident at work. «There are no comforting words in the face of a death as painful as it is sudden – writes Maggi -; a good boy, a family man who leaves home in the morning never to return. This death leaves in each of us an incredible sense of the unpredictability of life, which should lead us to appreciate with greater awareness every moment we live.” Two communities were shocked by Calcagni’s death: that of Capranica, his town of origin, and that of Bassano Romano, where he has lived for years. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. «Originally from Capranica, he had lived with his family in Bassano Romano for many years now. Two shaken communities that embrace each other in pain – writes Maggi -. A touching thought and a huge hug to his wife Silvia, his daughter Nicole and their families. As soon as we have news of the date of the funeral we will proclaim the city’s mourning, as a sign of condolence for an entire country, certain that Giorgio will be looking down on us, smiling as always and with the ball under his arm. Have a safe trip Gio.” The funeral will take place tomorrow at the parish church, in Piazza Umberto I, at 11: city mourning has been proclaimed.
