Railways, the new Mind stop is born on the Milan-Varese line between Rho Fiera and Certosa

Located in a strategic and rapidly developing area, it will be a new metropolitan mobility hub

MILAN – Responding to the renewed mobility needs generated by urban transformations. The Milano Mind railway stop was created for this purpose, on the section of the Milan-Varese line between Rho Fiera and Milano Certosa. A new metropolitan mobility model that is estimated to allow 45,000 thousand people, every day, to reach both the new Mind Milano Innovation District and the Cascina Merlata neighborhood. To achieve this objective, an implementing agreement was signed between the Italian Railway Network (lead company of the Infrastructure Hub of the FS Group), the Municipality of Milan, the Lombardy Region and Arexpo.

The new stop of the Milanese railway system will be built in a continuously growing strategic area which currently has 10 thousand visitors a day and concentrates many activities with great attractive power including the new Galeazzi hospital (around 600 beds), the new scientific campus of the State University of Milan (where over 23 thousand people including students, teachers and researchers will arrive from 2027) and the Human Technopole research centre. Merlata Bloom, a space dedicated to shopping, extends south of the station. The station will therefore represent a vital hub for public transport and will facilitate travel in the area, with an expected traffic of 12.6 million users per year.

“The creation of this stop is very important for us – declared the CEO of RFI Gianpiero Strisciuglio – Milan Mind will be an example of a station that will have functions and services designed for an urban context in full transformation, very different from the current one”. The interventions, specifically, involve the construction of a covered platform which will be connected by a system of fixed stairs, escalators and lifts to the already existing Mic walkway, to ensure optimal functionality and accessibility. The project also includes a station building equipped with a concourse, waiting room and services for travellers. Outside, a velo station will promote the use of the bicycle as a sustainable alternative to the private car. From this perspective, a ramp will allow you to safely cross the tracks, overcoming the difference in height between the square and the Mic walkway, and guaranteeing the connection to the municipal cycle route thanks to the connection on the Cascina Merlata side.

Further functional works are also planned, such as dedicated areas for taxis and car parks. The works on the railway stop will have a total cost of 33.5 million euros, of which 10 million euros paid by the Municipality of Milan and 23.5 million euros financed through the investment program contract between MIT and RFI relating to the City Hub and metro lines. The new stop is part of the complex railway system of the Milan hub and is part of RFI’s commitments for the infrastructural strengthening of the Milanese stations: Greco Pirelli, Romolo, San Cristoforo, Porta Romana, Villapizzone, the new Tibaldi-Bocconi stop recently activated, which is accompanied by a plan for the redevelopment and completion of the accessibility of all the other stations.
