As the race for the 2024 European elections is coming to an end, with electoral silence upon us and the polls almost ready – voting will take place tomorrow, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June – the theme of Aosta Valley “representativeness” in the European Parliament returns to the center of the Attention.
In fact, in a note Union Valdôtaine And Alliance Valdôtaine – VdA Unie explain: “We have decided to reiterate, and we announce it not by chance at the end of the European elections campaign, the unconstitutionality of the current legislation on elections to the European Parliament”.
Which is why, “as council groups we asked an opinion to the constitutionalist Giovanni Guzzetta” which “explored the theme of representation in the European Parliament of the Aosta Valley”.
In the law in force and since first text of 1979 – continue the council groups – “a situation is highlighted violation of the rights of Aosta Valley residents through mechanisms that do not protect us at all and create a vulnus for our community that must be healed”.
A responsibility of governments
For this reason “the council groups will signal to the political movements, also in view of the reunification now imminentthe need to reiterate in the courts the injustice of which the Aosta Valley is a victim, in the absence of mechanisms that realistically allow the election of an Aosta Valley MEP. This is what has been proposed several times in Parliament by Aosta Valley parliamentarians and by the Valle Council without any success in 45 yearsfor the responsibility of the national parties that have succeeded to the government”.
The solution found, therefore, is one: “We will therefore start a process immediately after the vote which we hope will allow the Constitutional Court to express itself – closes the note –, assuring the Region of a full right of representation at the European Parliament”. In plain text, we still read: “Where Parliament has not arrived, we hope the Constitutional Court will arrive”
