5 years and 2 months in prison for the teacher

FANO Tennis teacher accused of sexual acts on underage students, the sentence is out. Yesterday judge Giacomo Gasparini, in line with the requests of the public prosecutor Ernesto Napolillo, sentenced Juan Daniel Manevy, the 37-year-old Argentine instructor, to 5 years and 2 months in prison, with perpetual disqualification from holding public office, suspended from teaching tennis or in schools and to be in contact with minors. Then the 12-month security measure, once the sentence is over, with a ban on approaching situations where the presence of minors is expected.

The judge also established compensation of 50 thousand euros for two children and 20 thousand for the third (assisted by lawyers Simone Candelora, Cristiana Cicerchia, Irene Ciani). The instructor’s lawyer, Cristiana Ugolini, promises an appeal. The case exploded in February 2023 following the complaint of three children against the teacher and the investigations carried out by the Fano police station, coordinated by the manager Stefano Seretti. At the time of the events the victims were 12, 13 and 15 years old. The alleged crimes concern groping and touching that the students were subjected to, even in their private parts, by the teacher of the Fano tennis club, who frequented them even beyond his sporting commitment. Physical contacts such as the touching of a thigh, or the brushing of lips when students entered his car to be accompanied to tournaments. There was also talk of a “driving test”. A boy, 12 years old at the time, after being induced to climb onto the legs of the tennis teacher in the driving seat, was allegedly touched repeatedly in his private parts. Then the messages sent via social media to the three minors, with the repeated writing “te quiero”, I love you. The instructor has always denied any sexual act, speaking only of hugs and warm contacts as per Argentine tradition.

«We have learned of the facts from the press – comments the president of the tenni della beam club, Leonardo Prencipe – there is talk of disputed episodes not during my period of presidency and which would have occurred outside the club. Some hypothesized that such behaviors had already been stigmatized by other structures but this was not confirmed. The teacher was a collaborator and was immediately dismissed. We did not become a civil party because things were not defined, but we immediately spoke with the staff and no signs of this type emerged. We listened to other parents and no other facts were found. No child was withdrawn from the club. Indeed, in recent years the movement has grown into a structure that boasts 125 years of history.”

Prevention is everything. «From 1 July procedures will be formalized to prevent episodes of bullying, discrimination and possible abuse, as per the regulations. We will indicate a figure to increase the level of listening of children and parents to any episodes. We want to create a curtain of attention to perceive any signals. There will also be a letterbox where certain incidents can be reported anonymously” concludes Prencipe.
