News at Fiumicino airport on controls for the boarding of liquids in hand luggage: containers over 330ml are analyzed with a manual scanner. This is due to an update of the control systems requested by the European Union. The update, explains Adr, will be completed in a few days and at that point the liquids (even small and large bottles) will be able to remain comfortably in the suitcase during checks, as has already been the case for several months in Fiumicino.

Containers of liquids at Fiumicino airport in recent days over 330ml are controlled separately. That is, they are extracted from the suitcases and passed through a special manual scanner. The decision was taken following a provision from the European Commission regarding some updates to the EDS machinery (i.e. baggage scanners) required starting from April 24th to improve the verification of liquids on board.

The hand luggage passes under the machine as usual, but when larger quantities of liquids are detected, travelers are asked to take the containers and bottles out of their luggage, which are then examined with a hand scanner.

The new devices were introduced in January 2023 for the first Fiumicino terminal, now also accessible for the third. And they allowed, until April, to pass checks without having to extract the classic ‘liquid sachet’. They also allowed you to carry larger containers and bottles, such as water bottles. Which is now not allowed due to these updates. The situation should only last for a short time, before returning to single control.

The rules in force at Fiumicino

The “Explosive Detection System” baggage screening equipment uses X-ray scanners to obtain a tomography of the baggage and automatically detect dangerous or explosive substances.

After the planned upgrades to the machinery, it will again be possible to go through security checks without having to remove small bottles of water and large bottles of perfume or soap (over 330ml) from your suitcase for additional checks. Whoever leaves, come on Terminals 1 and 3 it can transport them regardless of the type and leave them in the suitcase: the machines check if everything is OK.

These devices control the types of liquids, cosmetics and not only that: also computers, tablets and mobile phones are included in the controls. However, travelers going to the United States are excluded United States and Israel who have control corridors dedicated to them and continue with the old rules. Also pay attention to the destination and the return journey: remember that this technology may not be available at the destination airport.

Who installed the machinery

In addition to Fiumicino airport in Italy there are only Milan Malpensa (with terminal 1) and Milan Linate. In Europe the control service is available in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, London, Stockholm, Shannon and Birmingham.

How it worked so far with liquids in hand luggage

Since 2006, liquids have been transported in hand luggage but only divided into transparent containers and individually they should not exceed 100ml, for a total of ten packs per passenger. Overall the liquids could therefore not exceed one litre. There was then the need to group the liquids in bags, also transparent, before passing the suitcases under the X-ray scanners. The rules had come into force to counter terrorist attacks.
