Digitalisation of businesses, a leap forward for Umbria which for the first time exceeds the national average

Umbria’s leap forward in terms of the digitalisation of businesses but also in the average level of digital maturity of people, with the clear improvement being much stronger in the province of Perugia than in that of Terni. This was revealed by the “Guglielmo Tagliacarne” Chambers of Commerce Study Center, the fulcrum of the economic information of the chamber system, in the “Barometer of the territorial economy”, which takes into consideration six key parameters on the digitalisation of companies (Umbria in two indicators is above the national average, while in four it is below).

Digitalization of businesses. In the provincial ranking of the average level of digitalisation of companies according to the SELF i4.0 survey, the province of Perugia goes from 60th place (out of 107) in 2022 to 14th in 2023, with a score of 2.55 on the scale between 0 and 4 Improvement also in the province of Terni, although less marked. The province of Terni, which in 2022 was in the bottom of the provincial ranking of the average level of digitalisation of businesses, placing 96th out of 107, in 2023 moved to 74th position (the SELF i4.o survey assigns Ternano a score of 2.14 on a scale of 0 to 4). Results that reward the commitment on the digitalisation front of businesses and which for the first time lead the province of Perugia to exceed the national average (that of Terni, however, although improving, still remains well below the national average). With Perugino’s push, Umbria is also above the Italian average for the first time.

Digital maturity of people, both the provinces of Perugia and Terni exceed the Italian average. The province of Perugia is also in a good position with regards to the average level of digital maturity of people, placing itself in 27th place in the provincial ranking in 2023 (score 0.61 on the scale from 0 to 1), above the national average. The province of Terni comes in 27th place (average score 0.61), also exceeding the national average.

The other four indicators, both the province of Perugia and even more so that of Terni, are below the national average. The province of Perugia is in 72nd place, and that of Terni in 101st out of 107 Italian provinces, therefore at the bottom of the ranking, regarding the percentage share of income of workers who are required to have the ability to use mathematical and IT languages and methods, while Perugino is in 55th position, and Terni in 81st, in terms of the percentage share of workers’ income who is asked to have the ability to use digital skills. Umbria certainly does not shine even in the percentage share of workers who are asked to have the ability to apply “4.0” technologies to innovate processes (Perugino is in 78th place, Ternano in 91st) and in the “Relevance Digital Skills Index” of workers’ earnings.

The strong commitment of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce for the digitalisation of businesses. The Umbria Chamber of Commerce has the digitalisation of businesses at the center of its action, as well as the ecological transition of the regional economic system, which are two sides of the same coin. Suffice it to underline the Punto Impresa Digitale (Pid) Umbria, which is a service structure, authorized by the Ministry of Economic Development and located at the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, dedicated to promoting the culture and practice of digital diffusion in MSMEs ( Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) of all economic sectors.

The Pid services range from assessment and technical assistance (free self-assessment service, evaluation of the company’s degree of digital maturity with SELFI 4.0 and ZOOM 4.0 offered by the Punto Impresa Digitale Umbria) to concessions and financing: the Pid Umbria offers support financial through Digital Voucher 4.0 tenders, with non-repayable contributions aimed at companies that invest in innovation, and offers a free information and orientation service on facilitation and financing measures intended mainly for the innovation and digitalisation of companies, with a attention also towards the green transition.

Also worth mentioning are the training and information activities carried out by the Umbria Democratic Party, aimed at encouraging the implementation of digital transformation processes in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises with training and information events for businesses on the possible solutions offered by enabling business technologies 4.0. So the security check-up for companies, with the provision of a new IT security assessment service to Umbrian companies to help them understand the IT risks to which they are exposed: from cyber attacks, to telematic scams, to identity theft and so on.

Not to forget the evaluation of the company’s online presence, made by a digital promoter from Pid Umbria. An initiative with which the Punto Impresa Digitale dell’Umbria provides Umbrian SMEs and MSMEs with a free evaluation service of the company’s online presence aimed exclusively at companies registered with the regional Chamber of Commerce.

The declaration. “The data from the Tagliacarne Institute on the digitalisation of Umbrian businesses – states Giorgio Mencaroni, president of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce – are comforting, highlighting a consistent improvement which rewards the effort being spent on the digitalisation and ecological transition of the regional economy However, some things should not be overlooked. The first is the territorial gap, on the topic of business digitalisation, between the provinces of Perugia and that of Terni, a topic that needs to be explored in greater depth to better target policies with a view to overcoming this gap. And then there is the fact that, out of six indicators that the Tagliacarne Institute uses to evaluate the digitalisation of businesses, Umbria is below the Italian average in four (and so is both provinces). done, but there is still more to do. In short, no one can relax on these issues on which the future well-being of Umbria is at stake. As always, the Chamber of Commerce is at the forefront of this effort”.
