Today, at the headquarters of the Provincial Federation of the Democratic Party in via Tagliamento in Avellino, the meeting was held on the theme “Avellino, security and legality between present and future”. “The safety and tranquility of citizens are among the main objectives of our action. Obviously, we will do it in concert with the police, the Police Commissioner and the Prefect,” declares the mayoral candidate Antonio Gengaro. “Cities need security. We will strengthen the traffic police service both in the city center and, above all, in the neighborhoods. We will do all this in concert with the Avellino Police Commissioner, who is the highest coordinating authority on these policies. I believe that, between us and all law enforcement agencies, we will be able to guarantee safety for our citizens. Transparency is a precondition in administrative action. Only in Avellino has it become optional. This is a central issue in this election campaign. I hear my opponents, especially Nargi, talk about transparency. Hearing Nargi talk about transparency is like hearing Dracula talk about the blood bank. They don’t even know what transparency is. If they had published the resolutions for two years, the people would have known the actions of the administration, what is done and what policies serve the community. The various stakeholders could have submitted appeals respecting the publication deadlines established by law. The institutional supply chain itself has collapsed. We work so that the Municipality is the home of the people of Avellino, a glass house where everyone knows what we do and where we, the elected representatives, are accountable to the people”.

Present at the meeting were Nando Romano, PD provincial manager for safety and legality and Avellino candidate for the position of municipal councilor, Nello Pizza, PD provincial secretary and Maurizio Petracca, regional councilor. “First of all, we must remember the concept of safety. Security for us is not a cost, but an opportunity that we give to citizens. Being a man of institutions, I wanted to have this meeting here, in the institution of the Democratic Party, where the commitment that is made is above all of the institution itself. Every place must be given due consideration,” he added Nando Romano. “Obviously we are talking about the city of Avellino, which is experiencing a moment of difficulty and rebirth. Let’s leave aside what happened, because it’s not up to me to decide. The fundamental proposal is to make an accommodation facility available to citizens. In practice, the mayoral candidate and I identified the ‘glass house’ in Piazza Kennedy. This will be a place of impact and meeting with citizens, a point of reference for legality and safety”.

Attention is needed not only to home burglaries or similar, but also to road safety: “There we should give immediate responses to the population. There will be a part of the municipal police stationed in that structure, which will guarantee everything concerning legality. Legality does not only concern home burglaries or the like, but also road safety. For example, if there is a pothole, this office will be called, and a permanent official assigned to this activity will proceed without delay, ensuring immediate intervention. Officials will have to report daily on legality-related activities. Another proposal concerns not only road safety but also commerce, since some commercial activities suffer economic damage due to street vendors who stop in strategic places without contributing to the city of Avellino. Implementing these simple initiatives will make the city more livable and improve the quality of life of citizens. The proposals are feasible because they can be implemented using structures already available to the Municipality of Avellino, which only need to be adapted. These structures, in particular the peripheral ones, can host community policing, especially municipal police, with the interaction of associations. We must divide the suburbs into three large macro-areas, and the people in charge will carry out prevention activities in those territories on a daily basis. We know that we have been hit by home burglaries, and people are afraid of these situations, to the point of organizing city patrols. In a modern society, this is unacceptable. We are fortunate to have the Police Commissioner who knows the city of Avellino and its critical points well. With the help of the municipal police and other police forces, we can really become effective in prevention activities.”
