Yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 5 June, in Bari, on the stretch of the Nazario Sauro seafront in front of the “Bergia” barracks of the “Puglia” Carabinieri Legion Command, there was a commemoration, with the citizens and in the presence of numerous civil, religious and military authorities, the annual anniversary of the foundation of the Carabinieri, which celebrates 210 years of history.
This year too, the Carabinieri of Bari wanted to celebrate the anniversary of their foundation among the people, to underline their closeness to the population, an authentic value and distinctive trait that has always accompanied the work of each of them in the service of their respective communities.
On the seafront, a training battalion made up of two companies, representing the various territorial and special components of the Army, together with the band of the 13th Tactical Support Command Department of the “Pinerolo” Mechanized Brigade of Bari, paid honors to the Commander of the Carabinieri Legion “Puglia”, Brigadier General Ubaldo Del Monaco. With the War Flag of the 11th Puglia Carabinieri Regiment, the first Company was deployed, made up of soldiers wearing the traditional Great Uniform and a representation of Station Commanders and provincial territorial departments, including forestry ones. The second company was made up of Carabinieri of the 11th Carabinieri Regiment “Puglia”, of Forestry Carabinieri and of the Carabinieri of the SOS (Operational Support Teams) and of the API (First Intervention Units) as well as soldiers of the various specialties of the Force, including helicopter pilots, dog handlers, bomb disposal experts and “Puglia Hunters”. To complete the training, some emergency vehicles of the Army were deployed, the Ducati Multistrada and Yamaha motorbikes, the AR Giulia car radios, the Gran Cherokee and Nissan Leaf Electric public order cars as well as the pedal-assisted bicycles of the “Park” biodiversity department. Altamurgia”.
The banners of the Puglia Region, the Metropolitan City of Bari and the Municipalities of Bari also took part in the ceremony, Altamura, Gioia del Colle, Monopoli, Modugno, Molfetta, Triggiano, as well as the banners of the National Carabinieri Association and the National Forestry Association, of the fighting and weapons associations of Bari, a representation of the professional trade union associations among the military, the widows and orphans assisted by the National Assistance Center for Military Orphans of the Carabinieri, the “Victims of Duty” and the families of the Fallen. On the sides of the line-up there was a representation of students from the “Madre Clelia Merloni” and “Balilla-Imbriani” institutes.
General Del Monaco, during his speech, underlined the trust placed by citizens in the Carabinieri, demonstrated again this year by the prosecution of over 78 percent of the crimes reported as well as by the numerous service operations that have made it possible to draw around 4,700 crime suspects were arrested, over 20,000 were reported at liberty and 15 tonnes of narcotic substances were seized. Results obtained thanks to the collective commitment of the 226 local stations and departments together with the 61 Forestry and Biodiversity Units, widely present in the 257 municipalities throughout the Region, through effective, qualified responses that are never free from the human sensitivity that has always represented the distinctive feature of the ‘action of a Carabiniere. Citizen orientation remains the true yardstick for evaluating the action of each Carabiniere, who must know how to listen to the people who see the uniform as a barrier to illegality, but also an antidote to the anxieties of modernity.
Eighteen, including 3 Station Commanders, are the soldiers who were awarded some awards, because they particularly distinguished themselves in important and delicate service operations and for civil merit. To these, the subject of the rewards given during the ceremony, others were added, concluded more recently by the Carabinieri of Bari, aimed at combating all the various forms of crime. In terms of combating organized crime, the following were significant: the investigation, which ended in March 2024, which led to the arrest of 56 people in the Japigia district of Bari, breaking up the Clan Parisi-Palermiti of Bari dedicated to the trafficking and dealing of narcotic substances, aggravated by the mafia-type method, seizing large quantities of drugs; the confiscation of 50 million euros from a well-known exponent of organized crime in the north of Bari, believed to be the proceeds of decades-long illicit drug trafficking activity.
The activity of the Carabinieri, far from being limited to the prevention and repression of crimes (by way of example, in the last year, in the Province of Bari alone, the Carabinieri have provided over 50 thousand preventive services on the territory and managed almost 350,000 requests for intervention received ) also translates into a constant relationship of closeness to the citizen as well as small heroic and altruistic gestures such as the rescue of a woman who, last December 25th, was overlooking the bridge of a busy road artery in Bari, in an attempt to throw herself into the void .
Particular attention was paid to the protection of vulnerable victims and, in particular, elderly people; examples of this are the numerous meetings, organized in parishes, clubs and community centres, aimed at preventing the hateful phenomenon of scams, during which practical advice was provided on how to prevent and avoid them, collected in useful leaflets where they were also illustrated the main techniques implemented by scammers. The force has also confirmed its traditional closeness to young people and, in this context, within the context of the initiatives promoted by the General Command of the Carabinieri on contributions to the formation of the “Culture of Legality”, the meetings in schools of every order and grade and student visits to the Carabinieri barracks. The soldiers who attended, in their presentation, also focused on key topics of the project on the diffusion of the culture of legality, such as bullying and cyber bullying, internet, gender violence, drugs, alcohol abuse and traffic education.
On the occasion of the 210th anniversary, the Carabinieri also set up, from 3 to 5 June, inside the “Bergia” barracks, an exhibition of historical uniforms, as well as exhibition stands of the equipment used by the special departments.

THE INVESTIGATION, WHICH ALLOWED THE ARRESTING, DURING ITS FIRST PHASES, OF 9 PEOPLE IN FLAGRAM OF CRIME AND THE SEIZURE OF 2.5 KG OF Narcotic Substances, Weapons And AMMUNITION, CONCLUDED WITH THE EXECUTION OF 22 PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES, OF INCLUDING 19 IN PRISON AND 3 UNDER HOUSE ARREST.
