After almost three weeks of peaceful protests, repressed with unprecedented violence of clear racial background, Macron (he who allowed the fascist fringe of white settlers to create armed militias; he who asked Australia to send its army to massacre us, receiving in fact a refusal) suffered a first defeat.
The Elysée was forced by us to revoke the state of emergency that had been in force for two weeks. It was revoked this Monday May 27th.
“To allow the meetings of the different components of the FLNKS (Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front) and to reach the checkpoints of the elected officials or those who can request their revocation”, Emmanuel Macron “has decided for the moment not to renew the status of emergency – this will not be possible to extend and will end on Monday at 8pm,” specifies the Elysée in its press release.
He also announces that “480 mobile gendarmes” will arrive to reinforce the security forces on site “in the next few hours”.
Macron “strongly condemns the blockades and looting”
The state of emergency established on May 16 entailed a night curfew, a ban on gatherings, the transportation of weapons and the sale of alcohol, and a ban on the TikTok application. They believed that a state of emergency would solve the problem. This was not the case. It made it worse.
Why this decision? The lifting of the state of emergency is a necessary act to avoid the war of independence, at least for the moment.
Macron understood that the violence visited on Calendonians was slowly transforming our peaceful protest. While rejecting violence as a political tool, the ferocious repression was forcing us to respond categorically and forcefully.
In New Caledonia there are more weapons than people, so there is no shortage of means. An armed urban guerrilla would have been unmanageable by a colonial power in economic decline, bled by military aid to Ukraine which is 17 thousand km away.
Australia’s wise refusal to intervene dashed the French King’s last hopes of an easy victory.
On the ground, the situation “remains very difficult for the inhabitants of the island, particularly in Greater Nouméa,” Minister of Overseas Affairs Marie Guévenoux noted in a press release Saturday evening.
The toll of violence rose to seven on Friday, the seventh being a 48-year-old brother of ours killed in Dumbéa by a police officer of the French occupation troops.
The main objective of the independence movement is to ease tensions and find lasting solutions for our country, so Macron’s gesture is welcome.
However, we continue to demand the withdrawal of the constitutional revision from the electorate, the end of the colonial period and independence.
Macron, to save his face, embodies the role of the wise leader who offers concepts but dictates how the dialogue must take place, obviously in his favor, threatening the resumption of violence that he will not be able to sustain for long.
“I assume a gesture of pacification and openness, but I will never make a decision to postpone or suspend under the pressure of violence,” reiterated Emmanuel Macron to Le Parisien.
The French president, his goodness, has given the Caledonians until the end of June. We will be helped by a “mediation mission” of three senior officials sent from Paris, to find “a global agreement” that “can be put to the vote of the Caledonians”.
You got it right. The dialogue will be directed by three envoys from Paris.
Is it possible that the Parisian elite is unable to understand that dialogue is doomed to failure if it is to be conducted on colonial logics where wise and civilized white men come to explain to the savages what is best for them?
