Bologna at 30 km/h: Municipality’s Committee of Guarantors says yes to the referendum proposal – News

The popular consultation proposal on the 30 limit is now admissible; the parties will have three months to collect 9 thousand signatures to go to the vote probably at the beginning of 2025

June 5, 2024

Ladmissibility has been judged by the Committee of Guarantors, therefore, it will be possible to go through popular consultation to decide whether to continue with the limit of 30 per hour in the city of Bologna or repeal the current law. To do it the parties will have to collect at least 9,000 signatures in three months. Considering the number of inhabitants of Bologna which is approximately 392 thousand, it should not be too difficult to reach the minimum number of certified signatures necessary. The forms must then be filed within three months from the date of first endorsement. The mayor of Bologna Matteo Leporewelcomed the news of the approval by the Committee of Guarantors. In reference to the referendum he declares “A beautiful and further opportunity for participation and discussion(…) we continue to work calmly on this measure, which we believe is essential to save lives, improve the safety and quality of public space”.

It is worth remembering that for Bologna the 30 time limit has been active since mid-January 2024, which these referendums can only concern issues of municipal competence, which do not require a quorum and, above all, their result is not bindingthis means that if the majority of voters expressed themselves against the measure, the administration could however choose not to eliminate it or to modify it in part. We will therefore see how the issue will evolve.
