the new block is born for the six teams involved

The second robot of the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo has been installed Monday 3 June 2024. The acquisition of a further robotic system was necessary because, after three and a half years of activity, the maximum saturation of the possibilities of using the unique robotic platform supplied. They were 183 interventions with the robot in 2024 (up to and including Friday 24 May). The trend is higher than the 2023 result (393 interventions). For this reason, last year the Lombardy Region approved further funding to make the doubling of robotic systems at Bergamo Hospital.

Bergamo, the second robot has arrived: the new block is born for the six teams involved

The second robot is also necessary because two new teams they started the robotic surgery program in the first months of 2024. General Surgery 3 – abdominal transplants carried out the first operations – with the surgeon Marco Zambelli to the robot’s control console, assisted by the Director Domenico Pinelli – to deal with benign liver tumors at evolutionary risk, neoformations of the gallbladder suspicious for malignancy e benign cysts to the spleen.

Thoracic surgery has also started operations since April, for the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the lung and the mediastinum. The Director operates at the robot console Alessandro Lucianetti assisted by Eliseo Passera. Pope John XXIII is theonly center in the province of Bergamo to carry out interventions with the robot for liver, pancreas and lung.

This brings the number of teams to six capable of carrying out minimally invasive interventions with the robotic platform. The two new Units involved follow the now consolidated surgical activity of Urology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, General Surgery 1 and Pediatric Surgery.

“It is a source of great satisfaction for me to see the long and tiring path undertaken over the last decade to keep the surgical standards of our company at the forefront and in step with technological updates crowned with this prestigious second acquisition – he has declared Luigi Da PozzoProfessor of Urology at the University of Milan Bicocca, Director of the Surgical Department of the ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII –. In Urology I now see the possibility of further expanding the number and type of surgical procedures that can be addressed in a minimally invasive manner. Being able to operate with robotic techniques is not just an opportunity in the urological field, but a real necessity. As Director of the Department of Surgery, I am happy to have insisted and worked to spread robotic techniques to many other surgical specialties. And it is precisely in these areas that we will see great developments in the near future. We played early. I thank the managements, present and past, for having strongly believed and been greatly committed to the project”.

Moreno: “A new robotic block is born”

To accommodate the ‘new arrival’, a section entirely dedicated to robotic surgery has been set up within the areas that house the surgical rooms – he announced Mauro MorenoMedical Director of the ASST Pope John XXIII –. This solution will allow us to exploit the synergies between the professionals capable of operating with the robot, as well as better logistics management. The new ‘robotic block’ made it necessary to reorganize the current operating room rotation, which also involved other surgical teams. The Management would like to thank them for the availability shown in this important technological update project.”

Locati: “Our center is a reference for surgery. Maximum efficiency in the use of the two robots”

“The high medical-surgical specialization of our hospital, which has matured in recent decades in parallel with the development of transplantological activity, the management of polytrauma in emergency-urgency, critical areas, maternal, child and pediatric areas, cardiovascular area and in the hemato- oncology, makes our center one of the main references in surgery for patients in the Bergamo area and beyond – he has declared Francesco LocatiDirector General of the ASST Pope John XXIII –. The presence of a complex case history makes it necessary to resort to cutting-edge interventional techniques, such as those offered by robotic surgery. I therefore thank the Lombardy Region for having provided, in its planning policy, the financing for the acquisition of the second robot, which we intend to use with the same efficiency as the current one, to appropriately respond to a growing demand, also in terms of variability of pathologies to be treated”.
