ANTALYA – Only the “final bang” is missing but Italy closes the Under 23 European Championships in Antalya with victory in the Nations Medal Table, the result of a super balance sheet: five gold medals, one silver and six bronzes. On the last day of competition, fourth place went to the women’s saber and épée teams, while the swordsmen finished in 5th place.

In the women’s sabre, the Italian team entered the quarter-finals with a 45-28 victory over Turkey. In the semi-final the quartet made up of Alessia Di Carlo, Benedetta Fusetti, Michela Landi and Manuela Spica fought until the end and, despite a good comeback in the central fractions, came out defeated against Bulgaria at the last push with the score of 45-44 . In the final for the bronze the Italians, followed closely by coaches Fabio Di Lauro and Diego Occhiuzzi, were beaten by France 45-34, thus finishing in fourth place.
Also at the foot of the podium was Italy’s women’s epee team, which started the day with a 37-28 success over Romania in the quarter-finals. In the semi-final, the quartet with Gaia Caforio, Carola Maccagno, Sara Maria Kowalczyk and Lucrezia Paulis played a point-to-point match against Ukraine but had to surrender at the last shot with the result of 45-44, thus reaching the final for bronze. The Italians, followed closely by the masters Massimo Zenga and Giacomo Falcini, were then beaten in the match valid for a place on the podium by Poland with a score of 45-37.

In the men’s event, the team made up of Filippo Armaleo, Enrico Piatti, Fabrizio Di Marco and Simone Mencarelli, as number 2 in the seeding, entered the match in the round of 16, beating Great Britain with a score of 45-34. In the quarter-finals the Azzurri were defeated by Ukraine 45-36, thus finishing in the rankings for 5th place. The team, followed by the masters Massimo Zenga and Giacomo Falcini, immediately recovered and beat Austria 45-35, starting the match for fifth place where the Azzurri beat Portugal 40-39.

This concludes a great edition for Italy, led by the Head of Delegation Alberto Ancarani, which equals the gold medals of Torun 2013 (the best edition that took place away from the Bel Paese) thanks to Filippo Armaleo and Gaia Caforio in the two tests individual épée and the triumphs of the men’s foil teams (Alessio Di Tommaso, Giulio Lombardi, Damiano Di Veroli and Giuseppe Franzoni), women’s foil (Anna Cristino, Aurora Grandis, Giulia Amore and Matilde Calvanese) and men’s saber (Mattia Rea, Lorenzo Ottaviani, Lupo Veccia Scalalli and Marco Mastrullo). The silver came from Benedetta Fusetti in the women’s sabre, while the six bronzes went to Giulio Lombardi and Alessio Di Tommaso in the men’s foil, Giulia Amore in the women’s foil, Lupo Veccia Scavalli in the men’s sabre, Enrico Piatti in the men’s épée and Michela Landi in the saber female.
