A first step to restore decorum to Villa Roomer a Barin the eastern area of Naples, one of one hundred and twenty-two Vesuvian villas of the Golden Mile. The Municipality has opened the tender to grant two spaces of the historic residence to private individuals with the aim, on the one hand, of enhancing the vast heritage and, on the other, to encourage the development of the territory through trade and cultural initiatives.

Palazzo San Giacomo is the owner of a good part of the elegant and ancient palace of Sirena course which is completely abandoned and waiting for attention. The procedure just started concerns, in particular, two rooms with direct access from the street. The first, at number 63, consists of two rooms and services, has a surface area of 44 square meters and is in normal maintenance conditions. For it the Municipality has chosen a starting monthly fee of 243 euros. The cost of the other room, however, is much lower: just 198 euros per month for the 41 square meters of number 65, also with two rooms and a bathroom. Convenience depends on both building and plant maintenance conditions – rated mediocre – and due to the presence of an inaccessible compartment, therefore not included in the estimate.

Whoever rents the properties will have to take care of all the costs expenses for maintenance work and take care of any furniture, waste and other material abandoned in the premises that are within the perimeter of Villa Roomer considered a settlement of historical interest as a pre-nineteenth century basic unit, as highlighted in the documents of the Heritage Protection and Regularization Service of the Piazza Municipio institution. The two spaces on Corso Sirena will be able to host private offices and professional studios, artisan businesses for the production of artistic goods or for the offer of services such as, for example, beauty, hairdressing, medical services, transport of goods and people and so on. «It will not be possible – clarifies the Municipality – to ask for rent for the sale of items for adults only, for betting and gaming centers and for the so-called “gold purchases”. Those who intend to win them will have to prepare an economic offer equal to or higher than the fee put up for auction: the criterion for choosing the winner, in fact, is that of maximum rise. The lease will last six years, renewable for another six. You have until July 10th to participate in the public notice and it is mandatory to take part in the inspection scheduled a few days before.”

Villa Roomer, one of ten Vesuvian villas of the Naples East district, is characterized by its imposing purple-red façade. The palace – which also takes its name from Sanseverino, princes of Bisignano – it was enlarged in 1600 at the behest of the Flemish merchant Gaspare Roomer starting from the ruins of a villa that had already existed since the end of the 1500s as described by De Seta in the book «I casali di Napoli». Other characteristic elements of Palazzo Bisignano are the courtyard with the portico and the well, the staircase and the terraces. No less beautiful and valuable are the lookout tower and the piperno balustrade on the terrace. There is no longer any trace, however, of the ancient botanical garden once located behind the structure.

The Villa di Barra – in the past also used as school – houses the frescoes attributed to Aniello Falcone depicting the stories of Moses and declared of particular artistic and historical interest in 2014. The paintings – commissioned from Falcone by Gaspare Roomer – embellish a private apartment on the main floor of the residence for which, for years, the restoration and general redevelopment by the Municipality so as to hand it over to the community.
