The phenomenon of private lessons in Italy is rapidly expanding, but with significant differences between regions. According to data relating to the first quarter of 2024, regions such as Molise, Calabria, Basilicata and Liguria have recorded considerable increases in requests for repetitions, mainly in subjects such as English and mathematics. In contrast, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna saw a decline in requests, with a greater preference for Italian lessons and fundamentals of law.
A common trend observed is the increase in tutoring requirements for middle school students. This data was collected by the ‘Letuelezioni.it’ platform, which has around 8 million registered users, of which 14% come from Italy.
Molise stands out for the most marked increase, with a 117% increase in requests for private lessons. Basilicata follows with an increase of 52.6%, Calabria with 51.7%, Liguria with 40.8% and Lazio with 6%. In contrast, Emilia-Romagna recorded a reduction in requests of 4.5%, while Tuscany and Lombardy saw drops of 3% and 2% respectively.
Student preferences are also changing significantly. In the island regions, for example, there has been a significant increase in requests for Italian and law lessons, with increases of 57.3% and 242.4% respectively, while the English language remains one of the most requested subjects in Calabria .
