They went through the bathroom reserved for employees, entered the ticket office and took away the safe containing the cash from the sale of travel tickets.

Then they ran away, presumably taking the same route. The cleaning staff noticed the fact and went to the site in the early hours of the morning and found traces of the raid. Burglary, therefore, at the station Circumvesuviana Of Greek’s tower. The thieves took away the entire chest, without opening it but dragging it away after moving it from the ground, where it was secured with screws and bolts.

The investigations

The police are now investigating the matter, but a significant step forward on the investigation front could come from the images of the video surveillance cameras, both those placed near the station and those along the surrounding streets. The criminals acted during the night between Sunday and Monday. They knew the premises of the station, the nooks and crannies and the areas where they could enter and then sneak into the offices. They took a window that wasn’t difficult to open and from there they reached the bathrooms that the station master and other EAV workers usually use. From there they arrived at the ticket office, on the side not open to the public. This is where the safe is located.

It was placed on the ground and fixed with some screws. Not walled up, therefore. This allowed the criminals to act with a certain speed, even if a lot of damage was still done to the premises. In addition to theft, therefore, we can also speak of a vandalism raid: substantial interventions will be needed to put everything back in order and allow employees to return to work in the station. After taking the safe, the thieves made the journey backwards. They exited from the same window next to the bathroom and then disappeared. It is not excluded that they helped themselves with a small ladder: between the window leading to the bathroom and the ticket office there is, in fact, a difference in height. In short, a painstaking job, carried out for some time. Whoever entered the station also knew that they would find the safe full or in any case with a large sum of money.

Anger

The EAV has provided official data on the stolen amount, it would be around 3000 euros. The weekend’s proceeds, therefore, had not yet been taken away and whoever acted was aware of this, taking the risk of staying at the ticket office for a long time to carry out the heist overnight. As has already happened in past episodes, the EAV made the images from the surveillance system available, which on other occasions were very useful. In total, the EAV made hundreds of images from the video surveillance systems available to the investigative bodies during 2023.

And even in 2024, even if there are no official data, the contribution of the videos proved to be fundamental in finding perpetrators of robberies, muggings, acts of hooliganism and assaults. The Torre del Greco episode was commented with bitterness by the Eav president Umberto De Gregorio: «Continuing like this is really difficult, the investments made for the creation of video surveillance systems and patrols with security guards are not enough but the army would be needed to protect the stations and trains». The theft, however, did not affect the regularity of the service. There were small delays to the journeys but these were not attributable to the situation at the Torre del Greco station.
