San Cataldo. Students of “Carducci” visiting Vassallaggi and the archaeological museum of Caltanissetta – il Fatto Nisseno

SAN CATALDO. As part of the project “Knowledge, protection and valorisation of local sites” – Civic education path, the students of the first classes of the two “Balsamo” and “Carducci” schools of the “Giosuè Carducci” Institute of San Cataldo, directed by prof . Salvatore Parenti, last May 31st carried out a guided tour of the archaeological site of Vassallaggi and the interdisciplinary regional museum of Caltanissetta.

Accompanied by their teachers, the girls and boys from “Carducci” had the opportunity to get to know the nearby Vassallaggi site. An indigenous-Greek site of great historical-archaeological interest and extraordinary from a landscape point of view, which certainly deserves to be better protected and enhanced with the creation of an antiquarium and adequate facilities for use. The students were guided impeccably by the archaeologist Alida Savatteri, who has been carrying out studies on the Nisse area for years.

On the same morning, the students of the “Carducci” Institute went to the interdisciplinary regional museum of Caltanissetta, in the Santo Spirito district. Here, they were guided by prof. Leandro Janni, regional president of Italia Nostra Sicilia, who highlighted the notable structural, functional and cultural peculiarities of the Museum, designed by architect Franco Minissi. The Museum collects most of the archaeological finds from sites in the Caltanissetta and Enna area, such as Vassallaggi, Capodarso, Sabucina, Gibil Gabib, Polizzello; it also offers temporary exhibitions on topics of cultural interest.

At the Museum in the Santo Spirito district, teachers and students were kindly received by Dr. Donatella Giunta, the architect Maria Rita Carelli and all the staff. Particular thanks are due to the director of the Gela archaeological park, arch. Luigi Maria Gattuso, who made visits to the Vassallaggi site and the Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta possible, in absolute safety. For the boys and girls of “Carducci” it was truly an intense and significant experience.
