They used hookahs without authorization in their restaurants, allowing their customers to use them. The discovery of the Guardia di Finanza of La Spezia and the officials of the Monopoli for Liguria Customs office who seized 12 kilograms of hookah molasses imported smuggled and without the required State seal. Fines of between 5 thousand and 50 thousand euros were imposed on each of the two managers of the commercial activities.

The places to be checked were also selected through the analysis of websites and social pages on which this particular type of service was advertised in addition to the traditional drinks typical of bars or restaurants. The consumption of molasses to be smoked via hookah is increasingly requested by customers of all ages and with a rapidly growing trend in our country too. The legislation in force provides that operators must obtain the required authorizations – the so-called special license issued by the Customs Agency – otherwise they risk heavy fines and, in some cases, even being reported for smuggling.

Recently, Customs and the Financial Police have signed a national memorandum of understanding relating to collaborative relationships for this type of activity. The purpose is to protect the health and safety of the community. Operational experience has sometimes shown the use of products that often do not comply with the health parameters required by European legislation and as such are certainly dangerous for consumers.
