Turin remembers Piazza San Carlo – “In memory of a victim, a non-profit organization was created to treat those who cannot afford it”

Turin commemorated this morning the tragedy in Piazza San Carlo of 3 June 2017, during the Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid, with a solemn ceremony.

The notes of Silence played by a municipal police officer and the laying of a wreath in front of the commemorative plaque marked the moment of remembrance. That evening, nearly 1,600 people were injured in the panic caused by the use of pepper spray by a group of youths. Two women, Erika Pioletti and Marisa Amato, lost their lives due to their injuries.

The city authorities attended the ceremony, including the mayor Stefano Lo Russo and the former mayor Chiara Appendino, as well as the family of Marisa Amato.

The family founded the non-profit organization ‘The dreams of grandmother Marisa’ to honor Marisa’s memory and draw something positive from the tragedy. “It was my mother who wanted her to be established,” recalled her daughter, Viviana d’Ingeo. The non-profit organization is committed to supporting treatment for those who cannot afford it and donating means of transport for the disabled, having already donated two vehicles and planning a third. Viviana underlined that, despite the bureaucratic difficulties, the family continues to work with determination thanks to the support received.

“My mother always had a smile, her nature was to give herself to people and always be available for everyone,” added Viviana. In conclusion, you expressed the hope that tragedies like the one in Piazza San Carlo will never happen again, underlining the importance of not forgetting what happened.
